Physiatry is the branch of medicine that deals with restoring function for a person who has been impaired as a result of a disease, disorder, pain or injury. Rehabilitation physicians (Physiatrists) are nerve, muscle, and bone experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you move. Physiatrists are physicians that treat a wide range of problems from sore shoulders to spinal cord injuries. Their goal is to decrease pain and enhance performance without surgery. Rehabilitation physicians take the time needed to accurately pinpoint the source of an ailment. As a physiatrist, Dr. Ibazebo will design a treatment plan that can be carried out by the patients themselves or with the help of a team approach with other health professionals, such as neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and physical therapists. By providing an appropriate treatment plan, rehabilitation physicians help patients stay as active as possible at any age. Their broad medical expertise allows them to treat disabling conditions throughout a person’s lifetime. Dr. Ibazebo treats the whole person, not just the condition, restoring as much function and independence as possible.

Dr. Ibazebo uses electrodiagnosis as an extension of the medical physical exam to diagnose conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, focal nerve entrapments, nerve root lesions (radiculopathy), systemic muscle and nerve diseases and neuropathies. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) directly evaluate nerves by using a small stimulation or “shock” to start a nerve impulse that can be measured in terms of speed and strength. Electromyography (EMG) indirectly evaluates the nerve by looking at the muscles using a very small needle electrode. Results of the study are discussed the same day.
